One of the most common illnesses babies suffer is the eczema. Eczema is a skin ailment, 1 out of 10 babies suffer. Common symptoms are red, scaly rashes which usually appear on face, leg, forearm, knee and elbows. It is very disheartening for every parent to see their bundle of joy suffer because of this skin condition. If not treated, it may lead to more serious skin condition. Aside from the irritation it gives the baby because of itchiness, it may also affect their appetite and sleep. Babies should be free from any illnesses because they are in the stage of developing their physical, emotional and physical aspect.

It is better to know the ways to prevent this type of skin illness rather than curing it. Here are some of the tips on how to prevent eczema in babies.

Baby’s Hygiene

A baby should be maintained clean all the time. She needs to have a bath everyday using only mild bath soap preferable those without fragrances or irritants. Wash her using a soft cloth. After washing, pat her dry and apply moisturizer all over her body to keep her skin hydrated. There are various natural liquid soaps available in the market today. It is better to use products without harsh chemicals preferable those with natural ingredients because babies have sensitive skin.

Along with a clean body, a baby should be clothed with comfortable clothes. Remove any tags in her clothes that might irritate her skin. Cotton clothes are preferable for babies especially when the weather is hot. Babies are prone to heat rashes that may trigger the growth of eczema. Parents should always check if they are getting sweat to avoid developing heat rashes. Let her wear clothes that allow air to pass through to let her skin breathe. Skin areas prone to eczema should always be kept dry but moisturized with creams or lotion.

Balanced Diet

One of the causes of eczema in babies is due to allergies to food. Parents should be aware of the proper introduction of solid foods to their little ones. One food should be introduced at a time preferable every three to five days. Observe any allergic reaction of the food to the baby. At their very young age, it is better to give them natural foods and avoid foods that might cause allergies such as the cow’s milk. Drinking probiotics is also good for babies to maintain the natural bacteria that will help fight any bacteria that may trigger skin allergies such as eczema. For babies below six months, breastfeed is best since the mother’s milk has nutrients that can help fight any bacteria.

Maintaining a Clean Environment for Your Baby

Aside from maintaining your baby’s skin clean and healthy, a clean environment free from irritants such as dust, smoke, and insects can help prevent eczema. Starting from her crib to every area of her room, it is better if the bed sheets, pillows, curtains, and blankets should be kept clean and washes weekly. The Room should be cleaned everyday by removing the dust and letting a little amount of sunlight comes in early in the morning. Always check her crib or bed of any insects that may bite her. Even her stuffed toys should be free from any dust or dirt since these are always being cuddled by her.

Be a Proactive Parent

As a parent, becoming aware of the symptoms and causes of any illnesses that may come to your child is very important. Maintaining a medicine cabinet with hydrocortisone cream, moisturizers or any cream or ointment for skin allergies may help cure the eczema earlier. But make sure to consult your baby’s pediatrician before giving her any medication.

Taking care of our little ones is not that easy. When it comes to their safety and health, as parents we should become proactive in giving the best care to prevent our babies to acquire illnesses and accidents. From childproofing to maintaining cleanliness of babies, parents should be aware of the causes, symptoms and treatment of various illnesses that might put our babies’ health at risk.
